Prompt 4

Unfortunately I was unable to go to the elementary school last week, because of spring break. I was also unable to go this week because of the accident I got into over spring break. I let my SL teacher know but I hope I didn't let the students down, because everytime I go there they are all so excited to see me. Well, theres always next week.

When I went to elementary school it wasnt too diverse. The school mainly consists of white students. However, there still were few blacks and asians. My best friend was actually phillipino. Like the students in my SL classroom all the students are friendly with each other no matter what ethnicity.
I never really knew what it was like to live in poverty, go to a really diverse school, or recieve free or reduced lunches. While in the elementary school I am currently tutoring in many of the children recieve free or reduced lunches. It is also very diverse there. I have never learned about a diverse culture but I am glad I am now and I enjoy it.

I can relate my sociocultural characteristics to those of my students because of not fitting into "scwamp". Since I am not a male I do not obtain that privledge of fitting it. Many students that will come into my classroom, when I become a teacher will all not fit into "scwamp" as well. But no matter what every student should be treated equally reguardless of fitting into "scwamp" or not. I believe that what I am learning in this class and the classroom I'm tutoring in are helping me to becomming a better culturally competent teacher.

  1. It is truly important to recognize how you situate yourself in terms of class, race, gender, etc, and this is a great use of SCWAMP, although while you think of yourself as privileged it does not mean that you have learned nothing about diverse cultures. I am sure you know a lot more thant you think and certainly the classroom experience will be a learning one...

  2. Well Lauren I hope you feel better soon, and don't worry I'm sure the kids will be glad to see you when you make it back. As far as you last post Prompt 4, that is kind of how it was when I went to school. I was from a one parent family, my dad died when I was three, mom died when I was eleven. I grew up in Chad Brown in Providence and still to this day my best freind is black. I liked what you said, every student should be treated equally because believe me when you are poor and your clothes aren't as nice as the other kids, all you really want is to be looked at the same. As I read SCWAMP I as a kid felt like that sometimes and wondered where I fit in or do I have to. Thank you for your posting, I do learn alot from these blogs from my classmates. Ed Angell

  3. Lauren, I understand how you feel about not being able to relate to some of your students. I also came from a pretty undiverse school system. Seeing my students when I tutor makes me think of how my life would be if I grew up how they are growing up in a school that is very diverse; how would I deal with diversity? I find it interesting to see the differences between how my Elementary School experience was for me and how these students are experiencing their Elementary schooling. Katelyn :)
